180° South: Conquerors of the Useless

180° South: Conquerors of the Useless by Yvon Chouinard, Jeff Johnson and Chris Malloy. Inspired by the obscure 1960s-era film Mountain of Storms about a journey from Ventura, California to Chilean Patagonia taken by Yvon Chouinard, Doug Tompkins, Dick Dorworth and Chris Jones called ‘Mountain of Storms’, 180° South: Conquerors of the Useless tells the story of Chris Malloy and Jeff Johnson as they retrace the epic adventure. Accompanying the documentary titled 180° South feature, this book is full of words and images not shown in the film and has been written, on a personal account, by Yvon Chouinard, Jeff Johnson and Chris Malloy. Accompanied by photographs from Jeff Johnson, Jimmy Chin, Scott Soens and Danny Moder, this book is dedicated to anyone planning their next expedition or with a love for the great outdoors. Published by Patagonia and printed on 100% recycled paper in keeping with the brand’s eco-orientated ethos.

In 1968 four keen climbers, skiiers and surfers set out to climb Cerro Fitz Roy – the mountain that can be seen on the famous Patagonia logo – and documented their travels using a 16mm Bolex. Re-released in 2018, the film has become an underground classic and has inspired many outdoor enthusiasts to follow in their footsteps.
